Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today extended his deep felt gratitude to Michael Genest for his service to the people of California. Following Genest announcing his resignation, the Governor announced that he will appoint Ana Matosantos as director of the Department of Finance.

"Mike has a long and distinguished career of service to the people of California and he has been a tremendous asset to my Administration," said Governor Schwarzenegger. "As director of the Department of Finance for the past four years, he served a critical role navigating the state through the worst fiscal situation we have seen in decades and I am deeply grateful for his service, dedication and commitment to our state."

"I know Ana is the right person to take on this important role at such a crucial time for California. In the coming year, our state will have to make incredibly challenging and tough budget decisions, and Ana has the knowledge and expertise necessary to guide my Administration through that decision-making process," said Governor Schwarzenegger. "With an extensive history in state finances, she has been an incredible asset as a member of my staff and to the people of this great state and I look forward to continue working with her, as California's first Latina director of the Department of Finance, to move California forward."

Matosantos has served the Department of Finance as chief deputy director since 2008. Prior to that, she served as deputy legislative secretary for health and human services and veterans affairs in the Office of the Governor from 2007 to 2008. From 2006 to 2007, Matosantos served as associate secretary for legislative affairs for the Health and Human Services Agency (HHS) and, from 2004 to 2006, was assistant secretary for program and fiscal affairs at HHS. Prior to that, she was also a consultant to the Senate Committee's on Health and Human Services and Budget and Fiscal Review from 1999 to 2004.

"I am honored the Governor has given me this opportunity to continue serving the people of California," said Ana Matosantos. "I look forward to using my experience working with state government finance to work with the Governor and his Administration to put California on the right track."

Matosantos, 34, of Sacramento, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Stanford University. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $175,000. Matosantos is a Democrat.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Continuing with its "Gauchos Give" community outreach commitment, UCSB Athletics is proud to announce it will promote the awareness of Hispanic Heritage Month. The national celebration runs every year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.

"As such a visible part of this great university we will always engage the community by promoting important diversity celebrations such as Hispanic Heritage Month," said Mark Massari, Director of Athletics. "We have such a great story in soccer and volleyball this year and I'm excited to celebrate this with the Hispanic community."

UCSB is partnering with the Santa Barbara Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to distribute 1,000 free tickets to each athletics event during September and October. Tickets are available at select area businesses. For information on those businesses, call Sergio Villa, the president of the Santa Barbara Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, at 621-7006, or Evelyn Cabadas at 621-7016.

"In order to truly be diverse, we must learn to appreciate cultures and to celebrate them," said Villa. "I'm honored to be a Gaucho Alum and to see that the Athletics Department is doing a great job at communicating this concept to their staff, teams and the community that they call home.

"The Santa Barbara Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is always pleased to partner with any organization that is willing to promote diversity and cultural appreciation. We are honored to be an advocate for the UCSB Athletics Department and their efforts to foster this same principle within the community."

Games included in the ticket giveaway are: Saturday, Sept. 26 women's volleyball vs. UC Riverside, Saturday, Sept. 27 women's soccer vs. UCLA, and the big, nationally televised (Fox Soccer Channel) men's soccer match against Indiana on Friday, Oct. 2 at 8:00 p.m. The Gauchos lost a heartbreaker to Indiana in the 2004 national championship game on penalty kicks but beat the Hoosiers last year in Bloomington.

As part of the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the UCSB men's soccer team will face the U-17 Mexican national team on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium in an exhibition game. Tickets are on sale by calling 893-UCSB or clicking here. Admission to the game is free for season ticket holders, including family plan ticket holders, and UCSB students.

Throughout the month Gaucho student-athletes of Hispanic heritage will be highlighted on UCSBgauchos.com. The first Gauchos to be featured will be Luis Silva (men's soccer), Jaimé Serna (men's basketball), Priscilla Perez (softball), and Ashley Ramirez (women's cross country).

Last year UCSB Athletics also promoted the celebration of Black History Month. The national celebration takes place every February.

It is proper to “have unrealistic expectations” was the message Deckers Outdoors Corp. President, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman Angel Martinez delivered at the 14th annual Santa Barbara Hispanic Chamber of Commerce awards banquet.

Martinez spoke to about 200 people at Friday’s banquet at Fess Parker’s DoubleTree Resort and Hotel.

“I have always reserved the right to have unrealistic expectations for my life, the lives of my family and the health of my community,” said Martinez who heads the 36-year-old, Goleta-based, $500 million-a-year shoe company. “I learned a long time ago, growing up on Webster Avenue and 179th St. in the South Bronx, that I alone set my expectations for my life and I can have high expectations of the people with whom I associate.”

Martinez said, “As a kid, even though my elderly guardians and I depended on taxpayers for food stamps and AFDC and Social Security, we were never poor – we just didn’t have any money.”

Martinez, 54, came to the United States in 1958 from his native Cuba. An All-American in cross country and track, he graduated from the University of California, Davis. He and his wife, Frankie, live in Montecito. They have four children and have been married for 30 years.

Martinez is the former executive vice president and chief marketing officer of international shoemaker Reebok Corp. As one of the Reebok’s founding employees in 1980, his vision was key to the Reebok brand creation.

“(R)ather than striving to be something, moving toward something, I’ve always found value in putting myself mentally at my goal and then coming back from that place,” Martinez told the crowd. “For example, in high school I wanted to run two miles in under nine minutes. So, rather than increment my way toward that goal, I decided that I was already a sub-nine two-miler – I just hadn’t run the time yet.”

Martinez said he lived in this mindset: “What does a sub-nine-minute two-miler eat for breakfast, how much does he train, how does he approach racing tactics, etc.? I never did run under nine while in high school, but I came very close – and did achieve that time my first year in college. Remember when I said we weren’t poor, we just didn’t have any money? Same thing. I came from success, I didn’t go to it.”

He said he had expected success because he already had overcome the mental obstacles by coming from a successful future.

After the Hispanic chamber honored a dozen area high school students, recognized five area businesses and gave KEYT anchor Paul Lopez its President’s Award, Martinez took the opportunity to give the audience his take on current educational issues.

He said two of his children initially were assigned to high school classes below their capabilities because they have an Hispanic last name. He talked to the school’s principal and his son and daughter were placed in college-prep classes.

“As well intentioned as teachers and administrators may be, and as beneficent as our educational system aspires to be, these experiences and observations opened my eyes to some of the issues we face as Hispanics in California,” Martinez said. “Without high expectations, will we be activists or victims? As Hispanic parents, do we attend parent-teacher conferences or events at the school apart from certain sports? Is the school’s involvement with Hispanic parents too often in reaction to negative issues, such as truancy or drug use or worse?”

He asked the crowd, “So are we activists on behalf of our kids or will we be victimized by a well-meaning educational system that doesn’t expect much from them in the first place?”

Martinez said when he was growing up his guardians expected him to get the best education America could give him. He said that’s what he expects for his children.

“So, I ask the parents in the room, where are you?” Martinez said. “What are your expectations? Is the solution for girls having babies at 15 or 16 years old to build a day care center for them at the high school? What message does that send? Are we putting more effort into fiesta celebrations than into our kids’ future and the future of our community?”

Martinez also had some questions for the business leaders at the banquet.

“You are the successful role models, the people our kids want to emulate,” he said. “Are you giving them the opportunity to meet your expectations? Have we, as a community, reached out to them with internship opportunities, community service opportunities, part-time jobs, tutoring or visits to their schools? Have we made our expectations of them known to them?”

Martinez said people only get what they expect in this life. He challenged Hispanics to expect more and take ownership of the community, schools, the city, the state and the country.

“Don’t succumb to a vision of our collective future that is mired in the struggles of our collective memory,” he said. “Have unrealistic expectations for this brief time we will all spend together on this earth.”

He said Hispanics must not be victims of indifference or apathy or that feeling that they are all just lucky to be here. “Hispanics will build the future of this country every bit as much as Germans, or Irish, or British or Africans have built its past,” Martinez said. “But we must expect more from each other before we can expect more for our future. And it’s OK. Go ahead. Have unrealistic expectations!”

Angel Martinez highlights

• Lead the team that designed and marketed the Freestyle aerobic shoe.

• As vice president of marketing, introduced Reebok basketball shoes, tennis shoes, walking shoes and fitness shoes, as well as being the architect for the Reebok “Classic” line of products.

• As vice president of new business development, he established Reebok’s presence in Hollywood, aggressively placing product in television, music and film production, as well as ensuring the brand’s visibility on high-profile celebrities.

• In 1994, named president and CEO of The Rockport Co., the largest subsidiary of Reebok International Ltd.

• In 2001, retired from Reebok after 21 years with the company

• In February 2003, partnered with Martin Keen to launched Keen Footwear. Martinez was CEO and vice chairman the outdoor footwear manufacturer from April 2003 to March 2005.

• In 2005, joined Deckers as CEO and president and was named chairman of the board in 2008. Deckers sells five brands of footwear; Deckers, Teva, Ugg Australia, Simple Shoes and Tsubo.

Students honored by SBHCC

Leslie Pluma, Michael Gonzalez, Karen Villegas, Javier Estefan Valencia, Miguel Chavez, Maria Garcia, Johanna Rangel, Adrian Isais, Miguel Martinez, Jennifer Ortiz Natalia Martinez and Derek Calzada.

(Yes, you can!).

Mr. Nava, whose credits include the Academy Award-nominated "El Norte," as well as "My Family/Mi Familia" and "Selena," was the keynote speaker at the Santa Barbara Hispanic Chamber of Commerce's awards banquet held Friday evening.

More than 300 people attended the eighth annual banquet at Fess Parker's Doubletree Resort. Santa Barbara Police Chief Cam Sanchez served as master of ceremonies of the event.

"Latinos just need an opportunity. No matter how small it is, we make the best of it," said Mr. Nava, who was a screenwriter for the film "Frida," about the life of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. His most recent project is the PBS television show "American Family," on which he serves as director, producer and writer.

Mr. Nava encouraged the audience to dream big: "Our community needs ambition," he said. He stressed the importance of the encouraging support of family, friends and organizations such as the chamber in helping people achieve their goals.

Three privately owned businesses that have demonstrated long-term success were honored at the event.

Bill Connell, founder of All-American Surf Dog, received the Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Mr. Connell started his popular hot dog stand on Bailard Avenue in Carpinteria in 1993. In October 2002, he opened another hot dog stand at the Greyhound bus station in downtown Santa Barbara.

Despite a recent setback to his stand at the Greyhound station -- part of the station's roof collapsed after a recent storm and damaged his new $12,000 New York City-style pushcart -- Mr. Connell had optimistic words of advice for the audience.

"Keep interested in your own careers, no matter how humble," he told the audience. "I sell a hot dog.

"No one realizes how important this award is to me. I worked hard for it," added Mr. Connell, who fought back tears as the audience gave him a standing ovation.

Another longtime business owner, Julio Juan Veyna, received the chamber's Small Business of the Year award. Mr. Veyna has been a landscape architect in Santa Barbara for 40 years.

"This is an organization we laboriously started many years ago," Mr. Veyna said. "One day we decided not to take orders from another organization similar to ours. And now it's exciting to see how we have grown."

The chamber's Business of the Year award went to Mission Linen, which was founded in 1930 in Santa Barbara. It now has more than 3,000 employees in several states.

Casa de la Raza received the chamber's Community Service Award, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art garnered the President's Award.

In addition to local businesses and organizations, the chamber also gave out honors to outstanding Latino high school seniors. They are: Aidin Castillo and Dora Olvera of Santa Barbara High School; Jessica Haro and Ramon Gonzalez of San Marcos High School; Elizabeth Romero and Felipe Velasquez of Dos Pueblos High School; Lionela Garcia and Cesar Macias of Carpinteria High School; Lorena Reyes and AJ Cavaletto of Bishop Garcia Diego High School; and Mayra Huerta and Luis Alvarado of La Cuesta High School.

Congresswoman Lois Capps and Assemblywoman Hannah-Beth Jackson presented their own certificates of recognition to each of the students.

New officers and directors of the Santa Barbara Hispanic Chamber of Commerce were installed at the banquet. Alex Rodriguez, owner of VirtualHispanic.com, is president; Pedro Nava, attorney, and Emma Torres of Santa Barbara Bank & Trust are vice presidents; Olivia Rodriguez of Women's Economic Ventures is secretary; Carola Nicholson, CPA, is treasurer.

Board of directors include Marsha Bailey of Women's Economic Ventures; Leticia Perez of Wells Fargo Bank; Matt Quintos from the County of Santa Barbara; Vicky Reese of Santa Barbara Bank & Trust; Hugo Rodriguez of GMAC Mortgage; Rogelio Trujillo of Trujillo Garden Service; and Luis Villegas of Mesa Communications.
